Welcome
Welcome to the website of Ropley Karate Club. The
members train at the Village Hall, Vicarage Lane in Ropley on Sunday and Tuesday
evenings. New members are always welcome. Each class is conducted in a friendly
and relaxed atmosphere, training is based on Shotokan Karate with a strong
emphasis on practical application and defence. The members have been training for
some time, and provide a fun and supportive network of individuals who strive to
improve and maintain a family environment which ensures new members feel not
only at home but also are supported in their endeavors to improve.
Training consists of practice of the basic principles of
karate, namely Kihon (basic techniques and combinations) Kata (preset forms) and
Kumite (sparring, both free sparring and prearranged pairs)The training sessions
are conducted by John Gilliland 7th Dan, who has over 40 years of experience in
Karate and other martial arts, indeed holding 6th Dan Ju Jitsu and 3rd Dan Judo,
martial arts which help him combine facets of each to ensure correct
interpretation and improvements on lesser known techniques within karate such as
throwing or joint locking. The outcome is varied and very interesting lessons and
interpretation of techniques where the aim is always practicality of effort. We
operate an open door policy, anyone is welcome to come along and join in, and
our members are welcome to train elsewhere and enjoy the different forms and
methods of teaching and emphasis, in the current climate, we also acknowledge
that it can be difficult to train regularly, we accept that some members simply
train when they can.
Students attending range from beginner through to senior black belts with
many visiting black belts who attend for specialised instruction or simply to
train with the chief instructor. The club is part of Gakushuin Karate
International, an association open to all styles though predominently
Shotokan.Club members enter competitions usually in the South and have had
success at each competition entered so far, however the principle remains the
same, competitions are simply one aspect and are not the overall reason for
training.Unusually for many clubs, Ropley Karate Club has a high proportion of
ladies all keen to improve and progress within karate, as with most clubs
throughout UK, we also have a high percentage of children of all ages who
regularly attend to learn new techniques and perfect those they already
know
